F- FOR FIVE & FEW THINGS ABOUT THE NUMBER FIVE

FIVE & FEW THINGS ABOUT THE NUMBER FIVE

FYI….For Your Information, I am not a numerologist. However I have I am fascinated by scores of things involving different aspects of life. Today is the SIXTH Day of this #AToZBlogchatter Challenge and the Alphabet of the day is F.

When I thought of F, of many things that came to my mind, the first that struck me was FIVE – The Number.

There are so many things about the significance of the number 5. However here I am writing precisely about few of them.

Here are my observations on number 5

In Religion & Culture –

In Hinduism more precisely Hindu Culture, the Number Five has a great significance. There are names of the lord and religious rituals attached with it. Let me write some of them here

In Hinduism

Lord Shiva is believed to be a five faced god hence he is revered as PACHANAN. Panchmukhi Shiva is an image of the idol of Lord Shiva with FIVE faces.

FIVE is the sacred number of Lord Shiva so five mantras (verses) and five syllables represent him signifying his five heads that demonstrate five aspects of his divine persona.

The goddess Saraswati, goddess of knowledge and intellectual is associated with number 5. Her day of worship is termed as PANCHAMI or Sree Panchami – The FIFTH day of the month of ‘Magha’.

His Mantra is also called Panchakshari  (Five Worded) mantra.

It is used as an offering during poojas
It is used as a libation during Abhisheka
It is also used as a skin cleanser.

PANCHAMRITA – The literary meaning of Panchamrita is FIVE AMRITAS (NECTAR) in Sanskrit. It is a mixture of five things used in Hindu worship and puja as sacred offering to the Gods. These are Honey, jaggery, milk, yogurt and ghee.

PANCHA MAHABHUTA – Five Great Elements – Pancha Bhuta or Pancha Maha-Bhuta in Sanskrit, are five great elements, also five physical elements, is a group of five basic elements, which, according to Hinduism, is the basis of all cosmic creation. The five elements are fire, water, air, earth, and ether. These elements have different characteristics and these also account for different faculties of human experience. In ayurveda and Indian philosophy, the human body is considered to be made of these five elements.

PANCHUKA – This is related to Odisha and The Culture of Lor Jagannath.  PANCHUKA is the last five days of Kartik month in Odisha and people abstain from all types of non-vegetarian food during the period.   Traditionally, staunch devotees of Lord Jagannath abstain from all type of non-vegetarian foods during the entire Kartik month which is regarded as Holiest Month of the months but those who are unable to follow it, observe it during the Last five days of the month. The five-day period is also of great connotation in Puri Jagannath Temple. Thousands of people who are observing Kartik Brata for the entire month gets an opportunity to have darshan of Lord Jagannath in FIVE different veshas or attire during the period. In PANCHUKA it is also believed that even the CRANE BIRD doesn’t eat fosf. That’s why it is also called as BAKA PANCHUKA

FIVE PHASES – In Hinduism Manifestations of the Deity are expressed in five phases:

  1. Source or Seed–The Ain Soph Aur or Adam Kadmon
  2. Root –World of Emanation of Atziluth
  3. Tree –World of Creation or Briah
  4. Branch –World of Formation or Yetzirah
  5. Fruit –World of Action or Assiah

These five phases form a schema of the Tree of Life

PANCHA-PATAKA – Is a set of Five worst acts/Unforgivable Sins described in Vedas (Scriptures) which are unpardonable

1.BRAHMA-HATYA: Killing of a Brahmana
2. SISU-HATYA/GO-HATYA: Abortion and killing of children, cow and animals
3. SURA-PANA: Drinking liquor or alcohol
4. SVARNA-STEYA: Stealing
5. GURU-TALPA-GAMANA:  Illicit Sex / Sex with Guru’s wife.

Apart from that…..
The most sacred tree in Hinduism has 5 leaves in every leaf stunt.
Most of the flowers have 5 petals in them.
The epic Mahabharata revolves around the battle between Duryodhana and his 99 other brothers and the 5 pandava princes –Yudhistira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeba

In CHRISTIANITY

Five i.e. Number 5 is an angelic number, it’s the number of the harmony, balance and the divine grace. According to the Bible, it is the symbol of the Man-God by the Five wounds of the Christ on cross. For this reason, it is also considered as the number of the grace. There are five great mysteries: Father, Son, Spirit, Creation and Redemption.

In BUDDHISM

The number five holds great significance in nearly all Buddhist traditions. It refers to the Five Colours, the Five Senses, the Five Wisdom, the Five Buddha, and a host of other important philosophies. The number five is intimately associated with the Chinese theory of the Five Elements, a concept underpinning the Zodiac Calendar, the latter serving as the preeminent calendar of old-world Asia.

In SIKHISM

PANJ KAKARS  – Five Ks – The five sacred Sikh symbols prescribed by Guru Gobind Singh are commonly known as PANJ KAKARS  or the “Five Ks” because they start with letter K.

They are:

  • Kesh – Unshorn hair
  • kanga – The Comb
  • kara – The steel bracelet
  • kachhehra – The soldiers shorts
  • kirpan – The sword

Also, there are five deadly evils:

kam (lust), krodh (anger), moh (attachment), lobh (greed), and ankhar (ego).

In ISLAM

  • The Five Pillars of Islam
  • Muslims pray to Allah five times a day, Five times Namaaz a Day.
  • According to Shia Muslims, the Panjetan or the Five Holy Purified Ones are the members of Muhammad’s family: Muhammad, Ali, Fatimah, Hassan, and Husain and is often symbolically represented by an image of the Khamsa.

Apart from Religious and Cultural aspect here is few more significance of Number FIVE
The number 5 is signifies in the biology of Human as man has Five fingers in each hand, five senses and five toes in each foot.
Geographically there are PANCH Maha sagars, Five Oceans on the Earth.
Five fingers make a fist. Five people make a PANCHAYAT.
The Olympic Games have five interlocked rings as their symbol, representing the number of inhabited continents represented by the Olympians (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Oceania and the Americas.

Five is also the only prime that is the sum of two consecutive primes, namely 2 and 3 in Mathematics.

.

.

.

And The List goes on…. There are many more unique things and observation about Number FIVE.The number 5 is the most dynamic and energetic of all the single-digit numbers. It is unpredictable, always in motion and constantly in need of change. It’s a number of positivism, resonates with the influences and attributes of personal freedom and progress.

DID I SAY MY BIRTH NUMBER IS ALSO NUMBER 5 That Is 14th Of November??????? 🙂

E For Encounters @Life

Encounters At Life….

Every day is a school life at the School of life. I always feel Life itself is a school that teaches me the very lessons of being a human and sensible in a realistic world.

Here is an encounter that taught me for what it is to be a human. It taught me kindness….

It happened few months back. We were returning from a Dadar after attending to a Doctor. The appointment was over around 10 pm and by the time we reached Vashi it was almost around 11:15 p.m.  It was already late so we decided to pack some food from a restaurant for dinner.

We went to one and placed our order. In a while the parcel was ready. As we came out, suddenly it started drizzling. The car was parked at a little distance. If we would have walked to the car, it was certain that by the time we reach we would have drenched ourselves by and large if not totally. We couldn’t afford to allow our son to be soaked to the skin as he has serious respiratory problems and damped with rain would definitely aggravate the ailment. My husband asked my son and me to wait there while he went to the car to bring the umbrella. Near that restaurant a Fruit Juicewala has his outlet. We stayed there.

Although it is a busy lane in general but that time it was almost crowd free as it was late in the night. Most shutters were already down. Not many people I could see surrounding the Juicewala as well. I observed some of them were even bargaining for the price for a “Glass Of juice” although he was selling it in a nominal price as compared to the same “Glass of Juice” in any branded juice outlet or restaurant.

Well…that’s the way most of us do…I guess. I loved the way the Juicewala appeared to be. Tireless, energetic and cool…I quickly clicked some pictures of him without him noticing.

I saw a little boy – may be in his early teens – was standing there and looking at the Juice glasses. With a cursory glance only I thought he might have been a son of a shopkeeper in that place or the people around there.

After some time I saw The Juicewala offered him “A Glass of Anar Juice (Pomegranate juice) and the little soul gulped them as quickly as he could.

Now I was sure the boy was either known to the Juicewala or he might have been asked to offer the juice by any elder/guardian of the boy. However I was proved wrong as I saw the little boy ran to a tempo parked at few steps away after hearing a harsh tone from a mid aged man who was behind the wheel.

Encounters At Life…The Fruit Juicewala!!

He ran swiftly and quickly boarded the tempo and within moments it was out of sights.

I was bit curious. By that time my Husband had already reached with Umbrellas. But I couldn’t stop myself asking The Juicewala about the whole scene.

What he said had a deep impact on me…

The little boy was a child laborer working as a helper for that tempo driver. They had come there to deliver something for sure. The boy was waiting their till his boss come out with the payments.  He was perhaps hungry which the Juicewala understood. So he offered him a Glass of Juice even if the boy was completely a stranger to him.

Just before I had seen “well off” people quibbling hard to lessen even Rs10/- for a glass of Juice where as the Juicewala offered an entire Glass – which could have earned him Rs.70/- per a Glass of Anar Juice – to a hungry child. Also none of us including me could see the starving eyes of that boy….isn’t it something shameful on our part?

As I boarded the car I had already stirred from within like always such Encounters at life  do… It was something soul stirring as it made me realized the shrunken consciousness inside us the so called “well heeled affluent” people. We perhaps need counseling on “kindness and generosity” and need to learn some lessons on humanity from such people around us like that of the above Fruit Juicewala”

Indeed, Kindness is word that may be a deaf can hear and a dumb can speak but the people without heart or conscience can never understand….

With the Encounters at Life I always wish…. Let me be a STUDENT @Life …always.

D For DARK SKIN IS JUST A LAYER OF MELANIN

Dark Skin is just a layer of melanin and not a Crime and Light Skin is Not a Prize.

Once there was a balloon seller who used to sell balloons of different colors with hydrogen gas (which is lighter than air) filled in them. Every day he would go to a park to sell balloons. The children playing there would buy his balloons as per their choice of colors and then go to the play area and release the strings in the garden to compete with each other. Soon the atmosphere around that place would be filled with ear-splitting looping sound effects emerging from noisy and laud shrieks of excited children.  The competition would be whose balloon would go higher than the others and the children would be very happy with this.

One day while the balloon man was selling the balloons he felt someone was tapping on his elbow. He turned around to see who it was. He found out that the person tapping on his elbow was a 7 year old ‘Black’ girl. The balloon seller, surprised and curious, bent down to ask her which colour balloon she would like to have. However, instead of choosing a balloon the little girl, evidently inquisitive, asked him, “Uncle Can I ask you a question?”

The balloon seller amused by the innocence of her said calmly, “Yes my child. What happened? What do you want to ask?” She said, “Uncle, if the color of a balloon is BLACK then would it ever be able to compete with others or at least be able to fly?” Startled for a moment and then composed, the balloon seller smiled and replied, “Dear child, it’s not the color of the balloon that makes it fly, but the THING that is INSIDE it.”

I had read this story somewhere and honestly I was moved. I know every one of us must have been touched at the reply of The Balloon Seller. “It’s not the color of the balloon that makes it fly, but the THING that is INSIDE it.”How true!

However what we must ponder over is what made that little girl – who might have seen only few springs in her life – ask this question. That speaks volumes about how “skin color” of a person affects the core of him/her. Can we dare to deny that we aren’t instantly judgmental towards the skin color of a person? Don’t we define beauty of a person especially a woman, with The Color of the Skin getting an upper hand over the other attributes of beauty?

Even Martin Luther King Jr. once said that, “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Undoubtedly these are the golden words scripted in the history but what more important is “What made him – one of the most eminent person in the world history, most visible spokesperson, activist and a distinguished leader in the civil rights movement in America – utter these words” because there lies the deep complexities of skin color that reigns the human psyche since the time immemorial and how this bias has affected humans – having a darker skin tone –  socially, personally, culturally  and psychologically all over the world. Isn’t it?

Discrimination based on skin color, also known as colorism or shadeism, is a form of prejudice or discrimination in which people are treated differently based on the social meanings attached to skin color. (Source – Wikipedia). Indeed, complexion is incredibly complex. For centuries, mankind has been obsessed with the color of the skin. This mania has resulted in an assortment of human traumas, crimes, heartbreaks and racism. Colorism is invasive within the Black community and that most Black people especially women have been, either culturally or personally, affected by intra-racial discrimination. It is a global sin and it won’t be wrong to say that every human – at some point of time – has been a part of this rot.

Women – in India as well as worldwide – are the worst victims of this Skin Color biases. Girls with a darker complexion face a lot of difficult things in terms of being abused, ignored and denied of opportunities apart from being thrown with most insensitive jabs.  I personally remember in my growing days a neighboring uncle used to be very worried for his dark skinned daughter and would always say that he has to earn a lot of money to give a handsome dowry to marry her off as a compensation for her skin tone.  Imagine the state of the mind of the Girl!

This is the reason why, over a period of time the options for a fairness cream in the market have just grown. The deep rooted fascination for fair skin has just made us get attracted to the illusive world of cosmetics and beauty products. And the owner of these products has been grown in terms of fat bank balances. They never change the natural skin tone but sure, they drift us from our own being.

Black kids face a whole universe of problems that their white counterparts don’t. Raising a ebony child means preparing him or her to bear the brunt of racism in all of its forms. It starts with to be looked at with frown faces to eventually parch with insensitive remarks, insensate isolation and delivered with injustice. As if “Having A deeper layer of melanin means a guaranteed ticket to be treated inhumanly, socially, personally and emotionally.” And a girl having ebony or dusky skin tone is even worse than having a deadliest nightmare.

Sometime I really wonder what is it that makes us so obsessed with skin color and is there any logical basis to people’s perceptions of skin color?

As Alan Goodman, Biological Anthropologist said: “All skin colors, whether light or dark, are not due to race but to adaptation for life under the sun.”

In fact, judging a person by their Skin Color defies logic. Dark skin is the original ancestral state of all humans.  Some individuals were born with mutations giving them lighter skin and a combination of diet and sun exposure led to this trait continuing on in some individuals says the recent scientific studies.   Therefore, it becomes clear that the belief that white skin is more superior does in fact defy logic. Lighter skin is merely a biological mutation – nothing more and nothing less as per a recent study published in the journal PLOS Genetics. In fact similar studies for the variation in human skin color have been published in many platforms like The Atlantis, The New York time’s etc state the same thing.

However, we can’t deny the bitter realities of skin color complexities and its peccadillo effects on human race having its monarchy since the dawn of the time.

As an Asian in general and an Indian in particular, I have a fair set of strange observations regarding the skin color complexities ruling us still today. Just a cursory glance at the Classifieds columns in any newspaper will show us our obsession with fair skin. And what it means to be a dark girl in a Country like India.

Even if in our ancient scriptures like Ramayana and Mahabharata the lead characters Sri Rama, Sri Krishna and Draupathi were all dark. Why even the author of Mahabharata Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa was also dark skinned. But still we can never see a matrimonial adv not mentioning the fair skin tone requirement for a bride.  So it’s futile to ignore the reality and better to face it with a strong will. So let’s face it…if we at all want a change and bring in a solution to it this aged, deeply grained social  evil.

We all know Mahatma Gandhi, during his stay at South Africa, once was thrown out of a first class bogey of a train by British for just being a black and Indian even if he had a first class ticket for it. That incident probably had acted like a spark to ignite His resolution to kick out the British raj from India. And he eventually became successful in by becoming the face for the Indian Struggle for freedom and independence.

Can’t we resolute to kick out complexion based discrimination from the human society, the same way?

Indian actress and activist Nandita Das has recently started a campaign named “Dark is Beautiful- Stay Unfair Stay beautiful.” Similarly, actress Kangana Ranaut, one of those reigning queens at the box office today hit headlines in recent past when she refused to endorse a fairness cream brand, despite being offered a whopping Rs 2 crore for the same.

She explained that she has several reasons to not endorse a fairness cream brand.  She doesn’t like the way such ads are presented, and thinks that they do hurt the confidence of darker people, especially women.  Her sister too is a little dark, so endorsing a fairness cream would mean insulting her own sister and the rest of the community who aren’t fair.

Recently I watched a Ayusman Khurana and bhumi Pednekar Starer movie Bala where Bhumi plays the role of a Dark skinned girl who faces rejections from the childhood but grows up to a confident women advocate. She accepts her skin tone and shows that its not the epidermis but the brain cells rules the life.

Kudos! To these people who are strongly asserting their voices against these deep rooted evil. However, it isn’t enough…I feel. It is time that not only the dark toned women come out in solidarity, but I would also like to see the naturally whiter ones promoting this skin shade to popularize it. I would like more and more celebrities, worldwide, should come together & stand in solidarity against biases against dark color, but it certainly needs a collective effort from all of us.

Fairness should not be on the skin but it has to be deep inside. “The cloth of a person is never a true measure of his wisdom and understanding.” ― Ernest Agyemang Yeboah. Society first looks at the dress that is on the body in appreciation and then the color and texture of the skin. It never looks beyond those two which is much more important which is within. One has to have a heart as white as milk and as pure as a crystal. Yes, there is a cosmetic for that which is LOVE, COMPASSION and AFFECTION…..Am I right????

For centuries, skin color has been used as a marker of race, but now new research is changing the way we see ourselves, and each other.  Science is beginning to uncover the intricate relationship between our pigment and our environment. Perhaps one day, a greater level of education about these factors will help to eliminate the prejudice that has existed since the dawn of time and which still continues today.

Minds steeped in ignorance will find it difficult to embrace diversity.  We have to change our “conditioned-concept” of beauty. Beauty lies within the soul and not in the skin. One has to find his own inner treasure. A good heart filled with the radiance of the soul is real beauty. Lack of awareness will make a person blind to the inner beauty, in self as well as in others. Compassion that comes with awareness has the power to cleanse prejudices and break barriers.  Color of the skin of a person doesn’t make him more or less human. We are humans. And there are no dividing lines beyond the epidermis.

I dream of a day “when we can fit high definition cameras in our eyes, that can see beyond the skin of a person and find the beauty or ugliness in his/her heart. At present, we have filters and HD cameras in the mobile phones only. I wish we grow them up in our eyes too.

And yes, one day we can say that little girl that balloons are destined to fly in the air unless they are puncture with the stereotyped beliefs and taboos.

It’s Not the COLOR OF THE SKIN But It’s the Content in Character Makes Us Human. Indeed!!

C For CADILLAC

Cadillac is a division of the American Automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) that designs and builds luxury and beautiful cars. The predecessor of this company is The Henry Ford Company.

It was found on 22 August 1902 by William Murphy, Lemuel Bowen and Henry M. Leland. Cadillac is among the first automobile brands in the world. It is named after the person who found Detroit, Michigan, Antoine de la Mothe Cadilac. The Cadillac crest is based on his coat of arms.

This company has already established itself as one of America’s premier luxury car makers. Its interchangeability of its precision parts has allowed it to lay the foundation for the modern mass production of automobiles. It was and still is the forefront of technological advances, the clashless manual transmissions and the steel roof. This brand developed three engines, with the great mighty ‘V8’ engine setting the standard for the American Automotive Industry.

Cadillac was the first U.S. car to win the Royal Automobile Club of the United Kingdom’s Dewar Trophy by successfully demonstrating the ability to select components at random and fitting them together with proper tolerances during a reliability test in 1908. It won the trophy again in 1912 for incorporating electric starting and lighting in a production automobile f

This company is so magnificent in making cars that it is chosen for making the Presidential State Car.

Nicknamed ‘The Beast’, ‘Cadillac One’, ‘First Car’ and code named ‘Stagecoach’; it is the official state car of the President of the United States of America. The current presidential state car is a unique Cadillac that debuted on September 24, 2018.

CADILLAC – THE BEAST!!!

United States presidents embraced automotive technology in the early 20th –century when President William Howard Taft purchased four cars and the converted the White House stables into a Garage.

Before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, presidential state cars allowed the president to ride uncovered and exposed to the public. The assassination of John F. Kennedy began a sequence of event which resulted in increasingly armored and sealed cars.

The current Presidential State Car of the current president of United States, Donald Trump is a Cadillac which is equipped with Eight-inch-thick bulletproof glass and is hermetically sealed with its own environmental system. Priced at $1.5 Million, this Cadillac limo is one of the most famous Presidential Limos.  This one is especially nicknamed ‘The Beast’.

The Beast is actually built upon the chassis of a GM (General Motors) truck. The windows of this car are made of five layers of glass and polycarbonate which have the strength and audacity to withstand armor piercing bullets. Only the driver’s window can open, just up to 3 inches. Its Eight-inch thick military grade armor is made from a combination of materials like titanium, aluminium , steel and ceramics. The vehicle’s front possesses grenade launchers equipped with tear gas and night vision cameras. Reinforced steel plates have been added to the chassis that protect the car against bombs and mines. The tyres have steel rims and being Kevlar-reinforced they result in shred and puncture resistance. This car can escape even with burst tyres due to the steel rims which allow it to drive even with a puncture.

Armored plated and thick as hell, the weight of the doors is equal to the weight of the cabin door of a Boeing 757. Once the door is closed it seals and protects the car 100% against chemical weapons and other weaponry. Filled with explosion prevention foam, the doors can endure a direct hit. These doors can electrify the handles to prevent unauthorized entry.

In addition of the defensive technicalities designed, it has blood stored of the president’s type for medical emergencies as a remedial or preventive measure.

It is hermetically sealed against fluid attacks and features smoke screens and oil slicks as defensive measures against the assailants.

This car uses a gasoline powered V8 engine which does 3.7 miles to the gallon. The fuel tank is armor plated and encased in special foam to protect it in a crash or from small firearms.

This is one of a kind limo. “It may say Cadillac, but very little in that car is Cadillac”, said by one of the agents. “Even the Cadillac emblem on the hood and trunk are supersized. The car really is a truck that looks like a limo. And it drives like one too.”

Thus this is the end of the blog. The car which offers one of the best luxury car experiences is what it is, a CADILLAC.

Hi Friends…

Actually I wanted to write something else. However my super smart, super car enthusiast (Unlike me) just-into-teens son told me that he would like to write on Cars, Was there any other option out there than to comply?

Why CADILLAC?

During the Namaste Trump event in the last week of February He was asking me many questions about U.S. Presidents, White house and American Legacy of Car…blah blah not to know but to see “IF I KNOW OR NOT”. Yes, these days he is my GURU on many things. Once he asked, “Mama, do you know which car used by the President of United States and what are its unique features? Honestly, I didn’t know.

So here is the write up for me too…..

B for B-Tech Biryani – An Idea That Changes The Outlook

B for B-Tech Biryani – An Idea That Changes The Outlook!!

B – Tech Biryani…..

Sounds curiously interesting…right?

Well, before I write about it let me start with a declaimer…I don’t like BIRYANI and also not too much fascinated about food. I am not too fascinated by some traditional spices like bay leaf, Cinnamon and other whole spices either because of their strong and intense flavor.

I know, my friends who get that instant tickling foodgasm hearing the word “Biryani” would be little bit upset by reading this, feeling that their efforts to convince me to develop the taste buds for Biryani are yet to bear fruit (which seems apparently impossible though).

However, I guess Biryani itself doesn’t care if some  dim-witted people like me like it or not because it has a massive fan following from corner to corner of the globe, across the religion, demography, community, age, gender…etc because of its own appealing and tempting attributes. People just adore it as a heavenly foodI have to agree that Biryani, in itself, is a complete delicacy. The amazing blend of the flavors of the long grain, fluffy and aromatic Basmati rice with chosen spices just takes it to an entirely new echelon in terms of taste. Next is the type of cooking style used, that is, the “Dum” effect – the most authentic way to make Biryani is by mixing all the spices and sealing it for more than 5–6 hours on a slow fire, which renders its cooking in its own juices. Simply heaven!

I guess Biryani is so popular because of three main reasons:
1. It is high on flavor and amazingly tasty
2. It is a complete meal in itself
3. It Appeals to every age and every palate

Well…this post is not about BIRYANI as a food but as a thought. Read on…

For a moment let me take you to a particular festival of Odisha – Balijtra- which is celebrated at a particular place – . Balijatra Padia(Ground) at Cuttack, Odisha.

In Odisha the Hindu month Kartik – the first month in the season autumn –is revered as a highly auspicious month. And Kartik Poornima is considered as holiest day of the year and thereby most propitious. This day marks the beginning of the renowned festival known as Balijatra. The name Bali Jatra means ‘A Voyage to Bali’.

As per the legend, the festival is celebrated to mark the day when ancient Odia mariners would set sail to distant lands in south-east Asia for trade and cultural expansion. The day of Kartik Poornima (full moon) was considered as very much auspicious to start any sail to distant lands and Mahanadi River near the Gadagadia Temple Ghat, was used as a river port in the ancient period to start the sail. This popular colorful festival of Odisha marks its beginning from the day of full moon and continues for around 8 to 10 days at Gadagadia Ghat of the River Mahanadi where the Lord Kartikeswar – the presiding deity of this festival is worshiped. As a celebration an extravaganza of grand funfair is organized every year at the BaliJatra grounds on the bank of river Mahanadi spread over an area of 50 acres.

Moreover, through this festival, the locals also observe that day when sailors of Odisha set sails to distant lands of Java, Bali, Borneo, Sri Lanka, and Sumatra. To pay their homage, regional people make the artificial boat (made up of paper, barks of the banana tree, and cork) and float it in the water. Besides, the festival also observes the tradition of lighting lamps in the boat which is called Boita Bandana. This boasts magnificent panorama of innumerable boats lit with lamps on the river water.

The funfair, dotted with at least 1000 makeshift stalls and nearly 100 vending zones to showcase the ethnic goods along with modern gadgets and food stalls drawn from across the state and outside, the place becomes live with high decibel sounds and lights. It becomes a place to have a glance of WHOLE ODISHA in terms of its arts, culture and cuisine.

Last year, from November 19, 2019, this festival was held with the Odisha Assembly Speaker S N Patro inaugurating the festival in presence of a galaxy of dignitaries. People from different places throng into this place, mainly to enjoy the joy ride, to buy traditional art works and other stuffs, and savor food, an array of authenticated Odia delicacies.

However, with passing days one particular stall swarming up with crowds continuously caught the attention of many. It was a food stall and particularly its name was the reason to draw the attention.

Yes, probably now you have guessed name of the stall. Of course the name of the stall was B-Tech Biryani.

B-Tech Biryani was a Biryani selling stall. Apart from its catchy & interesting name, what made it stand apart and trendy was the makers of the stall. A group of passed out B.Tech students had come up with this idea of selling Biryani to the crowd.  They were well organized and knew what they were doing. That’s why the name B’Tech Biryani.

The Biryani tasted amazing too and that was quite evident from the crowd they were getting. Media channels look for these kinds of stories…right. On asking how it happened to them, one of them replied that after passing B.Tech in different branches of Engineering, for some reason they were unable to find suitable jobs. Unemployment takes a toll on youth making them drift towards many unwanted things. But this group decided to venture into a business, and what could be a better occasion to check the possibility of success of their idea than the grand Balijatra!

It was such a simple thought…Isn’t it? If you are not getting a suitable job then start something of your own. But it’s not that simple…keeping in mind that entrepreneurship is not common in Indian genes.

I didn’t visit the funfair but what made me pour my hearty admiration to them was their positive attitude towards life, their Enthusiasm to start something new, their way off Brand Establishment and moreover BEING INSPIRING TO THEIR PEERS!

A for April 1st – Utkala Diwasa!!

April 1st, when majority of people know it as “April Fool Day” for us Odias, it’s a day of proud and honour. It’s celebrated as UTKALA DIWASA, the day to commemorate the formation of the state as a separate unit on 1 April 1936.

April 1st – Utkala Diwasa….Today is  Utkala Dibasa the foundation day of Odisha. It was founded on 1st April 1936, the 1st state to be founded on the basis of language. Going by the History, The great State of Kalinga had always been a land of valour and courage. It’s well engraved in the pages of History how the Great Maurya Emperor Ashoka had to fight this land till its last mighty. The Kaling War is said to be one of the bloodiest and largest battles in Indian History. It had prompted Emperor Askoka to adopt Buddhism – a non violence way of life – and stop the empire building and military conquest. It’s often said that the spirit and nerve of Kalinga fighters had a great impact on Emperor Ashoka’s conscience. He became DHAMASHOKA from being known as CHANDASHOKA.

April 1st – UTKALA DIWASA

However, in spite of having a great political history and cultural record, Odisha lost its complete political identity in 1568 with the demise of King Mukunda Dev, the last Hindu King. Nevertheless, efforts for the centuries resulted to the formation of a separate state under British rule on the basis of the language on 1 April 1936.

Utkala Dibasa is celebrated in Odisha as well as outside of its land by Odia communities. Cultural programs, seminars, competition held during its celebrations.

About Odisha…..

With its long coastline and great reservoir of natural resources,  Odisha has some lovely virgin beaches, unspoiled places, untouched cultures and cuisines. It might be tagged as a lagged behind State but modernity has yet not been able to invade few of its places that are rich in bio-diversities and cultural assortment. A truly affluent land of flora and fauna, vibrant in terms of handicraft and handlooms and a state with divine serenity and peacefulness, I am Proud that I am born to this Magic Land. I m Proud To Be An Odia, Always!!

Here is a poem of mine that would give you a brief idea about My Land, ODISHA

A Saga Of Courage and Valour is what My Odisha Is!!!

A Saga of Courage and Valour,

Odisha is Just Not a Piece of Land

In terms of Rich Culture and Tradition

It’s no less than that of a Magic Wand!!

The Mighty Bay of Bengal as its Coastline

As a Territory of Eastern Glory, it shines

Its History is dotted with vivid courage & guts

Since its establishment in 1st April 1936

A Land Of Biodiversity Is what it is…

With loads of dense forests & marsh mangroves

A Land Of Majestic Fauna it is too

With elephant Sanctuary, dolphins, sea turtles & Tiger reserve

The Marvel of Konark Temple will stun you

Odisha is Unique in terms of its Cuisine and Culture

And the captivating Patta chitras, silver filigree

And applique artwork will live you amazed and Startled

The blessings of Lively Lord Jagannath

Fall on it always from His Holy Shrine

The tales of love nerve, sacrifice and peace

Is what echoes in its  every grain of sand
